RGCC StaffVolunteer Spotlight (820 × 312 px)

At Redeeming Grace Church, we believe the church is not a building, it’s people serving together to glorify God. We regularly highlight a volunteer or staff member who serves with RGC because they make everything we do possible!

Today we want to introduce you to Roni Mathew! Here's what one of our ministry leaders had to say about him:

I am so grateful for Roni and his family. He has been a gift to our church for quite a while, helping to lead us in worship through song. Outside of Sundays he has been a faithful brother who shares the ups and downs of life in community as he seeks to follow Jesus in all of life. He has a gentleness and care for people that is a blessing to all who know him. Roni, thank you for your faithfulness in leading us to encounter the Living God through song.

Mathew 1

What volunteer roles are you involved in within RGC?

I serve as one of the worship leaders at RGC. It's been an honor and privilege to worship the Risen King alongside my brothers and sisters and assist the congregation's focus towards the One who saves. I've also served in childcare (during Bible Studies and Parents' Night Out) when needed.

How did God lead you to be involved in those areas?

I was involved in the music/arts in my schools and church growing up. Music has helped fill a longing for community since I was young, as my best friends growing up were involved in music. I've served in my church’s choir growing up, and started leading worship a few years after college. I served at Sojourn prior the merge, and have enjoyed leading worship here at RGC. My role in worship leading is to never lead as if I'm singing to, or for people, but to sing with them, and just support in the process. Leading at RGC makes it very easy for me to accomplish that.

How have you seen God at work in our church community?

Through the relationships I have seen throughout the church. The generational diversity has blessed our family in the last two years, since the RGC/Sojourn merger. I heard a phrase from a community group leader a few years back:

"Everyone needs a Paul, everyone needs a Barnabas, and everyone needs a Timothy. A Paul, to mentor and disciple you; a Barnabas, to walk alongside the similar stages of life together; and a Timothy, someone whom you can be a "Paul" to."

God has used RGC to exemplify the Paul-Barnabas-Timothy dynamic throughout various ministries (Men's fellowship, the Worship Team, etc.).

Could you tell us some interesting facts about you? (ex. Hobbies, interesting facts, family, etc.)

  • I've been married to my wonderful wife Rachel for a little over seven years. We have two daughters (Charlotte aka "Charlie" - 5, Angela aka "Angie" - 2).
  • I grew up in Westchester, NY (about 30 minutes from NYC).
  • I am a big fan of the Yankees, Jets, and Knicks. Growing up, the Yankees helped me understand success and the Knicks/Jets helped me understand misery/failure/disappointment. I like to say that helped me become a well-rounded and balanced individual. 🙂
  • I work for the Department of Energy, specifically Fossil Energy, in their Budget and Financial Management Office.
  • I LOVE to cook, but I wouldn't say I'm great at it. Cooking and grilling are sort of therapeutic for me.
