RGCC StaffVolunteer Spotlight (820 × 312 px) (3)

Redeeming Grace Church, we believe the church is not a building, it’s people serving together to glorify God. We regularly highlight a volunteer or staff member who serves with RGC because they make everything we do possible!

Today we want to introduce you to Luis and Julissa Villalta!

Here is what their fellow Five15 ministry leaders had to say about them:

I have had the privilege of serving with Julissa in the Five15 youth ministry. At the outset, we were simply co-servants to the 10th grade girls. But it didn't take long for Julissa and I to become friends and sisters, carrying each other's burdens, swapping stories about work, laughing together, sharing meals, rejoicing in joys, and praying with each other. Julissa exemplifies holding fast to the Lord in times of deep suffering and grief, in joyous mountaintop seasons, and in all the everyday moments in-between. She's also a prayer warrior, a patient friend, and someone who invites others into her life. It was a blessing and delight to serve the youth with her and to encourage the students in the Lord, even as we drew closer to Him ourselves. Julissa, you are a tremendous blessing to me, and to our church!

~ Sara Sanders, Five15 Group Leader

I have the pleasure of knowing Luis from the time he first came to RGC. Over the years, the one thing that stands out to me about Luis is his unwavering commitment and passion for the local church. He has demonstrated this by intentionally seeking to live life together in community, through the highs and the lows. He has also demonstrated this by embodying a spirit of service. Besides serving on the worship team, Luis has been also serving faithfully in our Five15 youth ministry. He loves the teens, and he is zealous to see them grow as authentic disciples of Jesus. I appreciate that he seeks to cultivate an environment where our teens can have honest conversations about faith. His steady commitment to our church's mission is an example for us all. His selfless dedication truly embodies the essence of Christian love and fellowship within our church.

~ Kristo Voda, Five15 Youth Director

What volunteer roles are you involved in?

Julissa: Before my son LJ was born, I served on the ushering team on Sunday mornings. I also helped lead the 10th-grade girls' Five15 group last year.

Luis: I serve on the worship team and as a group leader for Five15.

How did God lead you to be involved in those areas?

Julissa: I was looking for opportunities to serve mostly on the weekends since my work week can be unpredictable. I came to faith in high school, and the youth group at my first church was instrumental in helping me grow in my faith. I was excited to get to know the youth at RGC.

Luis: I’ve always enjoyed singing and playing instruments since I was a kid. Growing up in a church, you get thrown into the worship team when you show interest. I am grateful to be able to lead and sing with everyone on Sunday mornings. Being involved with Five15 started back when Paul was there. He encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone and pour into the youth. Been able to serve in this ministry for a bit now.

How have you seen God at work in our church community?

Julissa: RGC is the biggest church I've ever attended. I was worried about getting lost in a big church, but I've been blessed to find rich relationships here. I think the LORD has taught us how to have deep, meaningful relationships within the church, not just a quick chat on a Sunday morning.

Luis: I’ve seen the Lord at work through Community Group, Sunday worship service, and being able to connect with others at church throughout the years. When my mom passed away in December 2021, so many people prayed for me and my family. So many checked in on me constantly. They poured their love and encouragement through prayer, Scripture, and meeting me where I’m at. This is a church that knows how to come together when a brother or sister is in need.

Could you tell us some interesting facts about you?

Julissa: I was born and raised in NYC (I even went to college there). Before COVID, I couldn't imagine leaving NYC. While I was initially hesitant about moving out to the "country," I really enjoy living in northern VA!

LuisMy hobbies include: soccer, Real Madrid, Eagles Football, and coaching soccer. An interesting fact is that there are 3 Luis’s in the family (see picture). My dad is Luis Antonio, I am Luis Humberto, and our son is Luis Jeremiah, AKA “LJ.” I wanted to be that guy and keep naming the firstborn son after his father.
