I Cry Out – Psalm 88

Justin Pearson

Lament is a normal part of our spiritual journey as we seek to follow Jesus in a broken-down world.

  1. God, do you hear me? (vv. 1-9a)

“Even in the deepest hopelessness God alone remains the one addressed.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

God, will you help me? (vv. 9b-12)

God, have you left me? (vv. 13-18)

How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?

    Psalm 13:1

But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.  I will sing to the LORD, because he has dealt bountifully with me.

    Psalm 13:5-6

What do we do with Psalm 88?

“The truth of the matter is all we have to do is live long enough and we will suffer.”

    D.A. Carson

“The second I’m furious with God, I’m totally close. Because you cannot be furious with somebody who isn’t there.”

    Madeline L’Engle
